The Tunguska event is an episode of a very fast moving meteorite that crashed into a Northern part of what is now Russia. The force due to impact is estimated between 3-30 Megatons of TNT. That's a greater force than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan combined. Most meteorites that strike Earth are not very large.
